Ramon Casas, Retrat de Lluís Bagaria (Portrait of Lluís Bagaria) (© MNAC. Barcelona. Calveras, Mérida, Sagristà)

A self-taught cartoonist, he may be regarded as one of the renovators of the caricature, especially the political caricature, with a strong personality and a style based on the distortion of shapes.

He started work in Barcelona on the newspaper La Tribuna, where he was very successful, and on the magazines Cu-cut! and Picarol, among others. In 1908 he left for America, working in New York, Mexico and Cuba. Upon his return in 1912, he went to live for a time in Madrid, where he contributed to the magazines El Sol and Espanya. He later worked with the Paris-based magazine Le Rire and the German Simplicissimus.

He also made occasional forays into the field of interior decoration.
